in case of old bulls, ignition timing also has to contribute to the smooth running of the engine, if the ignition is set far too advanced, the engine will run rough, detonation or knocking will occur n also u might get severe kick backs while starting the engine. if it is set too retarded there will be power loss, blueing of the exhaust pipe n burnt exhaust valve.
so propper ignition timing n proper air-fuel mixture r very important for the good health of ur engine.
apart from these there r other factors that contribute to engine overheating, starting troubles n poor performance.
in the avl engined bulls, ignition timing comes facotry set n does not change or deteriorate provided the CDİ or the TCİ (whichever ur bull uses) is in perfect condition.
dont be tempted to set the mixture a lil too rich for easy starting, rich mixture brings with it its own set of problems.
if ur machismo fails to start after a wet ride, check the spark plug cap, if it is a metal one replace it with a bakellite one. this ensures that there wont be any short circuit.

cold start problems r usually because of the strength of the air-fuel mixture. a lean mixture will give u the following problems
1) difficulty in starting a cold engine
2) engine overheating
3) knocking while accelerating suddenly at low speeds
4) a popping sound from the exhaust on deceleration
make sure ur carburetor is set for the perfect idle mixture n u’ll have no probs at all.
