Spandana Inspiration
in case you are wondering, spandana means reaction (and in some cases, inspiration) in telugu, my mother tongue. here’s my flickr photo stream.

i am one of the folks that came to the united states primarily to attend grad school in the early nineties, and stayed on to make a career in the high-tech and internet software boom that ensued.
since i’ve lived 1/2 my adult life, united states is more of a home to me than india. like thousands others like me in silicon valley, i have a dual allegiance to both the countries. i also travel quite extensively between bangalore and sunnyvale as part of my job in a large internet company.
i started writing this blog to reflect on some thoughts about the dualities of such life -
- a technology professional and a family man.
- a resident of both silicon valley (san jose, california area) and the silicon plateau (bangalore, india).
some more about me:
i am heavily opinionated and generally hate untidy and inefficient things. i believe in continuous personal improvement, growing old gracefully and adore my kids (twin boys, 4). i like to ‘have’ good things., so i end up saving random junk for ‘senti’ reasons. in my spare time, i pamper my plants, watch western/artsy movies and tinker in fixing random household things, electronics, cars, etc.
i am a workaholic, success-addict and in love with the promise of web. i think nobody is significantly smarter than anyone else – but sometimes, i also delude myself into thinking that i can do others’ jobs better than they can. one day, when i grow to be less self-centric, i hope to start a fund aimed at increasing public awareness around complex contemporary topics such that people can form inform opinions and take educated actions.
and then some:
i am a product manager by trade for the last 10 years and worked at several exciting companies (verity/autonomy, filenet/ibm, interwoven, citadon) on a variety of internet-related products. i currently work at yahoo.

thanks shantanu. your articles are quite genuine in it’s view point. though i might not agree with them, i appreciate the passion. you are somewhat like michael moore, i must say.
Indian programmers are considered world beaters. And they have rightfully gained their reputation over many years, slowly climbing up the value chain from BPO, low end maintenance jobs to doing cutting edge technology innovations. Valley is now littered with VP’s of engineering and CTOs who have Indian origins.
But sadly, the quality of Indian websites (in terms of UI/ performance/ usability) tells another story. Try using any premiere India based company site such as ICICI, Railways, IndianAirlines, TOI, and you would understand what I mean. The usability is terrible and the overall performance is atleast 5-10 years behind what leading global portals have. While gloabl web is already starting to talk about web 3.0 , Indian sites are struggling to be even legit web 1.0.
This is a conundrum for which I find no reasonable explanation. Is it because all good Indian programming brains get taken up by global companies, leaving only the remnants to work on Indian portals?
Since you have seen both worlds up close and personal, I will appreciate your views.
very valid point, one that i observed as well. i think the problem is with both the programmers and the users. will write about it once i organize my thoughts..
