Things I love about Bangalore/India

August 28th, 2007

one of the guys asked me if i only whine on this blog. so i thought i’d post on a few things i love about life in bangalore/india.

maid servant/ “bai” : all the tedious work gets done in an hr., on time, brisk and quiet, for about Rs.1,000/mo
power cuts : it gives you a bit of downtime everyday. if mosquitoes/heat isn’t a problem, i’d like to order one from 9-10pm please. there was a power cut last night, and i made some phone calls to family, did a bit of work on phone, but no screen-staring! how wonderful.

food : there is no real reason to eat stale food or food stored in the refrigerator. fresh food all around from corner ‘tiffin stalls’ (the ’sagars’ in bangalore) to awesome restaurants everywhere.. and.. home delivery of ‘carrier meals’ (1 carrier meal feeds 4)

SMS : has been a revelation in india. it’s convenient, cheap and easy to use. there is no concept of voicemail (woohoo!)

security : the security guy i mean. he is the guy that watches around the apartment block and helps the tenants with a variety of things like information, gossip, mail and occasional chores. a good security guy is an awesome asset to an apartment block.

motorcycles : they are comfy to ride, stylish (lately) and highly fuel efficient. other day i was thinking how many lanes it would’ve taken if everyone that’s using a motorcycle used a car.. unimaginable!

spirituality : there is no dearth of symbols, rituals and customs that remind you of god and spirituality.

autos : as much as you’d like to hate the autos for their driving adventures, they are awesome for getting from point a to point b.. if you happen to go where the auto wants to go, i mean.

i will add to this as i see more things.
